CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

Candidates’ weaknesses include:

  1. Lack of proper understanding of some essay topics. For instance, some candidates only described fasting based on their religious knowledge of the topic rather than the general meaning, reasons for fasting, its benefits and the  challenges involved in fasting.
  2.     Lack of exposure to selected Literature texts (Oral and Written).
  3.     Poor orthography e.g. dotting of letters and punctuation.
  4.     Inability to write Yoruba words correctly and poor spelling of terms;
  5.     Lack of in-depth knowledge of the set texts;
  6.     Writing only the pros and neglecting the cons of an argumentative

    essay.

  1. Lack of in-depth knowledge of the phonological and grammatical aspects    of the subject. Some Candidates could not differentiate between the brackets used for phonetic and phonemic symbols.
  2. Inability to derive new words from given data due to lack of knowledge of tone marks.
  3. Non adherence to rubrics.

 

SUGGESTED REMEDIES

 

  1. Cooperation on the part of parents and candidates in the learning of the subject, especially through the procurement of literature and language textbooks.
  2. Candidates should imbibe the habit of using the school and public libraries.
  3. Candidates should imbibe the habit of studying the set texts thoroughly.
  4. Candidates should equip themselves with the rudiments of the language   and the correct usage of punctuation marks.
  5. Candidates should use appropriate tone marks since Yoruba is a tonal language.
  6. Candidates should give special attention to the identified weaknesses in preparation for the examination.
  7. Teaching of the subject by dedicated, competent and motivated teachers.
Government should include the teaching of Yoruba as a compulsory subject in the school curriculum
