Candidate's Weakness

 

Candidates’ weaknesses include:

  1. Lack of proper understanding of some essay topics, e. g. Some candidates mistook ọ̀gá ilé iṣẹ́ for ọ̀gá ilé, some of them also wrote èmi ni ọ̀rẹ́ mi rather than  èmi ni ọ̀rẹ́ rẹ in the final greetings of their letters.
  2.  Lack of exposure to selected Literature texts (Oral and Written).
  3. Poor orthography e.g. dotting of letters, punctuation, poor use of tone marks.
  4. Inability to write correct Yoruba words and correct spelling of terms;
  5. Lack of in-depth knowledge of the set texts;
  6. Writing only the pros and neglecting the cons of an argumentative essay.
  7. Lack of in-depth knowledge of the phonological and grammatical aspects    of the subject. Some Candidates mistook Fóònù, a unit of sound in phonology, for telephone, an appliance in telecommunication.

Suggested Remedies

 

  1. Teaching of the subject by dedicated, competent and motivated teachers;
  2. Cooperation on the part of the candidates in the learning of the subject, especially through the procurement of literature and language textbooks;
  3. Candidates should imbibe the habit of using the School Library;
  4. Candidates should study the set texts thoroughly;
  5. Candidates should utilize their time well so that part of the time allocated to this paper could be used to read through their work so as to correct some of their common mistakes in spelling and the use of punctuation marks.
  6. Candidates should equip themselves with the knowledge and correct usage of punctuation marks;
  7. Candidates should use appropriate tone marks, since Yoruba is a tonal language;
  8. Candidates should give special attention to the identified weaknesses in preparation for the examination
