Candidates’ response should include:

• Statement of the central theme of racial discrimination and its effects on Afro-American lives; poverty.
• Character identification of Mrs Johnson.
• Her visits to the Youngers.
• Her role in the development of the plot: provides humour.
• She represents the negative side of the African American attempt to break the barriers of social class and race.

Candidates’ performance in this question was fair.
