Majority of the candidates who responded to this question performed above average.

In part (a), majority of the candidates stated five instances when a service is faulty during a volleyball game.

In part (b), majority of the candidates stated the duties of an umpire in a game of hockey.

The expected answers are as follows:

(a)      INSTANCES WHEN SERVICE IS FAULTY DURING A VOLLEYBALL GAME

When serving ball

• server is disqualified if he serves before referee’s whistle
• passes under the net
• fails to cross over the net
• passes outside the side antennae above the net
• touches a player before crossing to the opponent’s court
• falls outside the court
• serving team serves out of order(rotational foul)
• setting a screen to block the opponent from seeing the ball
• a server is not allowed to serve with one hand
• server commits foot fault/steps over service line
• enters the court before the ball crosses over the net
• when a served ball is hit/touched a second time by the serving team before it crosses the net

(b)    DUTIES OF AN UMPIRE IN A GAME OF HOCKEY
-     Holds pre-match discussion with his colleagues
-     Takes final decision/makes quick and correct decisions
-      Inspects the facilities and equipment/keeps game safe/ensures a safe environment
-      Blows whistle to indicate foul/goal/signals rulings
-      Conducts the toss for the choice of ends
-      Has the power to disqualify any player for unsportsmanlike behaviour
-      Keeps records of the game/ensures the correct amount of time is allowed
-      Applies/enforces the rule of the game/controls the match
-      Awards penalty corner/penalty stroke/free hits
-      Ensures fair play throughout the game
