    (b)        State the use of each of the following equipment in sprint races:
    (i)         starting block;                                                                          [1 mark]
    (ii)        lane box.                                                                                  [1 mark]
    (c)        Name three events in relay race.                                                           [3 marks]

Observation

 

 

The performance of candidates in this question was average.

In part (a), few candidates outlined the rules guiding athletes in 800 m race.

In part (b), majority of the candidates stated the use of starting block and lane box in 
athletics.

In part (c), majority of the candidates named three events in relay race.

The expected answers are as follow:

  • (a)             RULES GUIDING ATHLETES IN 800 m RACE
  • The standing start is used
  • Athlete must start from behind the start line
  • Athletes may not finish the race in the assigned lanes
  • No crouch start by the athlete
  • The race is started on curved starting line
  • There are two words of command only “ on your marks” and “Go”/whistle/gun
  • Runners can only overtake on the right hand side of other runners
  • A runner is not allowed to beat the gun
  • A runner completes two laps of the standard athletic track/lane
  • When staggered start is used competitors must complete first lap on their assigned lanes
  • Athletes must be properly dressed
  • Use of starting block is not allowed
  • A runner is disqualified if he impedes another runner to gain unfair advantage
  • Each athlete must wear a bib or number

(b)            THE USES OF THE FOLLOWING EQUIPMENT IN SPRINT RACES
(i)         STARTING BLOCK
For easy take-off/secure balance/secure a more efficient starting posture/generate force and speed at the start of a race.
