Question 1

 

(a) Explain each of the following styles of crouch start in sprint races:

(i) Bullet start

(ii) medium start

(iii) elongated start [9 marks]

 

(b)   State one use of the starting block during an athletics meet.         [1 marks]

 

Observation

 

 

Majority of the candidates attempted this question and their performance was average.

In part (a), few candidates were able to explain the styles of crouch start in sprint races.
In part (b), majority of the candidates could not state the use of starting block during an athletics meet.

The expected answers are as follow:

(a)  (i) Bullet start
Toe of the rear foot is in line with the heel of the front foot
The knee of the rear leg does not touch the ground
Hands placed shoulder width apart/behind the scratch line                     

(ii) Medium start
The knee of the rear leg is in line with the toes of the front foot
The knee of the rear leg touches the ground
Hands placed shoulder width apart/behind the scratch line                     

(iii) Elongated start
The knee of the rear leg is in line with the heel of the front foot
The knee of the rear leg touches the ground
Hands placed shoulder width apart/behind the scratch line                     

 

(b) Use of starting block during an athletics meet

It prevents athletics from slipping off at the start
It is used by athletes during the start of a sprint race
