(a) Explain the following giving two examples each:

(i) sewing notions;

(ii) clothing accessories

(b) List four different accessories needed for each of the following:

(i) wedding;

(ii) school;

(iii) interview into a higher institution.

(c) State three reasons which will influence an individual to make her garments.

Observation

Many candidates could not explain the meaning of sewing notions but wrote it as parts of a sewing machine instead of aids to sewing or constructing garments

The required answers to the questions are:

            (a)       Sewing notions

  1. Small items used in making and finishing garments to give them professional touch e.g. zips, ribbon, buttons, elastic, trimmings etc.
  1. Clothing Accessories are those item which are worn or used with garments to add taste, colour and accent to them (garments) examples are headgear or scarf, shoes, hand bag, gloves, jewellery, stockings etc.

(b)       Accessories needed for each of the following:

(i)         Wedding – shoes, hat, bag, earrings, neck laces, ties, brooches, hair bands, and clips bouquet of flower, veil, crown, gloves, stockings, cuff links, sash, breast pocket handkerchief.
                                                                                                                       
(ii)        School – bags, socks, ties, berets, raincoats, umbrella, portfolio.
(iii)       Interview – shoes, earrings, ties, wristwatches, bags, socks, brooches, tie pins, breast pocket, handkerchief, cuff links

(c)        Reasons that influencing decision to make own garment

    • Money available
    • Time
    • Ability to sew/skill
    • Need to show individuality/uniqueness
    • Inability of dressmakers to make individual’s desired style
    • When a dressmaker delays, one is compelled to sew.
