Question 1

(a) State two advantages and two disadvantages of polyester.

(b) State

(i) two properties of linen

(ii) two finishes applied to linen fabric

(iii) two sewing tips to guide a dressmaker when constructing a linen garment.

(c) Describe how to identify wool under the following headings:
           

(i) approaching flame;

(ii) in flame

(iii) out of flame;

(iv) smell;

(v) residue

Observation

This question on fibre identification was not properly handled. Some were busy telling stories instead of giving precise answers.

The required answers to the question are as follows:

1(a)     Advantages of Polyester

  -   It drapes/hangs well
  -   It is strong/durable/hardwearing
  -  it is easy to launder/easy to care for
  -  It does not fade.
  -  It is not easily stained
  -  It does not shrink
  -  It is mothproof
   - It has good sunlight resistance.
   - It dries quickly.
  -  It can be heat set/thermoplastic.
   - It is relatively cheap.
  -  It is insect resistant.
  -  It can be blended with natural fibre
  -  It resists acids and bleaches
  -  It is resistant to alkaline
  -  It is flame resistant
  -  It is crease resistant
  - It resists abrasion.                                               
                       
Disadvantages

-    It does not absorb water readily
-    It pills badly (forms tiny balls on the surface)
-    It builds up static electricity.
-    It cannot withstand high heat (poor conductor of heat)
-    With continuous use yarns separate.

(b) (i)   -     Properties of Linen
                       
-       It is strong
  -     Stronger when wet than dry
  -     It is very absorbent
-       It is comfortable to wear
-       It can withstand high temperature
-       It is smooth/ It has no fluffy surface
-       It is inflammable
-       It is firm to handle
-      It gives a good tailored effect
-      It is damaged by acid
-      It is attacked by mildew
-     It frays easily
-      It is expensive

(ii)  Finishes given to Linen

  -   Beetling
-    Crease resistant finish
-     Sizing
-    Shrinkage control

(iii)   Sewing Tips

-     Use open seam to reduce bulk
-     Neaten raw edges to prevent fraying
-     Press on wrong side to avoid a shiny surface
-     Fold pattern pieces neatly to avoid creases
-     Use needle of suitable size for the weight of the fabric
-     Assemble linen fabric quickly after cutting out to prevent    fraying

(c) Identification of Wool
           
Approaching flame  -      it curls away from flame
In flame   -           it smoulders
-    It does not flare up                           

Out of flame    -      it stops burning
Smell    -    burning feathers or hair
Residue    -        black beads which can easily crush
