Geography Paper 2 WASSCE (SC), 2020

Candidtates'Weaknesses

The following weaknesses could be inferred from the candidates’ scripts:

  1. violation of rubrics: some candidates rather than answer two questions from each section answered three questions from one section. This made such candidates lose precious marks;
  2. misinterpretation of action words: the meaning of action words used in asking Geography questions must be fully understood by candidates. Such action words include name, outline, state, explain, and differentiate etc;
  3. drawing poor map outlines without keys: some people drew poor map outlines without keys. Such candidates were also unable to accurately locate geographical features;
  4. incomplete coverage of the syllabus: the poor responses of some candidates to the questions asked showed that they did not fully cover the syllabus, for instance, some candidates did not understand reasons for industrial localization. Rather, such candidates mistook it for factors of industrial location.

SUGGESTED REMEDIES

  1. Obedience to the rubric: The rubric to questions is meant to be followed. That will ensure that the efforts spent on answering each of the questions are not in vain as corrects responses to the questions will count in the award of marks.
  2. Appropriate interpretation of the action words: The correct interpretation of the action words such as list, outlines, define and explain etc. will lead to proper responses that will lead to the scoring of high marks.
  3. Drawing good map outline: Practise makes perfect. Since it is almost certain that regional maps of Nigeria will features in the questions, it is great wisdom on the part of the candidates to spend time practising how to draw good map outline and locate important geographical features in such maps with appropriate labelling to score high marks.
  4. Complete coverage of the syllabus: it is ideal to start reading on time so that the candidate can fully cover the syllabus before the start of the examination.
