Question 2

  1. Outline four characteristics of nucleated settlement.
  2. Identify four functions of cities in the world.
  3. State four factors that favour the growth of settlements.

The question was fairly popular among the candidates and their performance generally was fair. Most of the candidates who answered the question were not able to outline the characteristics of nucleated settlement. The expected answer included:

  • existence of obvious centre called centre business district (CBD);
  • provided with several social amenities;
  • settlements are compact/chittered together;
  • groups of several family residence;
  • a feature of urban settlement;
  • high population density;
  • building concentrated at definite location;
  • well connected with road networks;
  • people are majorly involved in secondary & tertiary activities;
  • farmlands are located outside the settlements;
  • high level of interactions among inhabitants;
  • concentrated in small areas;

Few candidates were able to identify functions of cities in the world. The functions of cities in the world are:

  • commercial/market;
  • mining;
  • tourism/holiday/resort;
  • administrative;
  • recreational;
  • religious/ecclesiastical;
  • provision of social amenities;
  • educational;
  • social-cultural/royal;
  • port activities
  • defence/security;
  • residential/satellite town;
  • provision of high order services;
  • industrial;

Most of the candidates who answered the question were able to currently state the factors that favour the growth of cities in the world.
