    1. Thermal energy in Nigeria;
    2. Renewable energy in Nigeria.
  2. Identify four problems hindering the development of thermal energy in Nigeria.
  3. Suggest solutions to the problems identified.

Very few candidates attempted the question and the performance of most of them was poor. The source of thermal energy in Nigeria are petroleum (crude oil), fuel wood including charcoal, coal, natural gas and nuclear.
The sources of renewable energy in Nigeria are water, wave, sun, biogas and wind.
The problems hindering the development of thermal energy in Nigeria are:

  • scarcity of resources for thermal energy;
  • inadequate skilled labour;
  • competition with HEP;
  • low level of technology;
  • lack of political will;
  • limited market;
  • inadequate capital;
  • poor management;
  • high cost of spare parts;
  • project is capital intensive;
  • poor planning;
  • vandalism/sabotage;
  • social unrest/political instability.

The solutions to the problem hindering the development of thermal energy in Nigeria are:

  • development of thermal energy/ resources;
  • provision of capital /easy access to capital;
  • political motivation/commitment on the part of government;
  • expansion of market;
  • implementation of thermal energy plan;
  • reduction in tariff;
  • transfer of technology;
  • enhanced budgetary allocation for power;
  • effective monitoring;
  • encouragement of industrialization;
  • encouragement of foreign investments;
  • appropriate siting of thermal stations;
  • local fabrication of spare parts;
  • training and retraining of manpower;
  • encouragement of patriotism among members;
