The diagram below illustrates an event in athletics. Study it and answer questions (2) (a) to (f).

 

(a)        Identify the illustrated event.                                                                             [1 mark]
(b)        Describe each of the following skills in the event illustrated in the diagram:
(i)         approach run;                                                                                       [3 marks]
(ii)        clearance;                                                                                             [3 marks]
(iii)       landing.                                                                                    [3 marks]
(c)        Mention two races in which the equipment labelled X could be used.      [2 marks]

(d)        State five qualities which should be possessed by an athlete participating in the illustrated event.                                                                                                              [5 marks]
(e)        Name four equipment associated with the illustrated event.                                [4 marks]
(f)         List four officials associated with the illustrated event.                           [4 marks]

Observation

 

 

This question was well attempted, and the performance of the candidates was above average.

In part (a), majority of the candidates were able to identify the illustrated event.

In part (b), few candidates were able to describe the skills in the event illustrated.

In part (c), majority of the candidates mentioned two races in which the equipment labelled X could be used.

In part (d), majority of the candidates stated the qualities which should be possessed by an athlete participating in the illustrated event.

In part (e), majority of the candidates could not name four equipment associated with the illustrated event.

In part (f), majority of the candidates mentioned four officials associated with the illustrated event.


However, the expected answers are as follows:

 

  • Identification of the event

             (a)                    hurdle race/hurdles     
(b)                  Description of skills     
(i)               Approach run
-     run is started with a crouch starting by sprinting.

  • the run from the start to the first hurdle.
  • take about eight strides to the first hurdle.
  • eyes focus on the first hurdle.                                             

(ii)              Clearance

  • the body is lowered forward/leans forward.
  • the leading leg is raised and stretched forward.
  • the trailing leg is raised and bent at the knee.
  • the rear leg is swung sideways to clear the bar very fast.
  • the body crosses over the hurdle.                            

(iii)             landing

  • the leading leg deeps into touch the ground first/the leading leg is brought down immediately.
  • the trailing leg snaps/moves forward quickly to land in front of the leading leg.
  • landing should be on the balls of the feet.
  • arms move alternatively with legs forcefully.

(c)                    Races that involved the use of equipment labelled X

  • 80m hurdles race.
  • 100 m hurdles race.
  • 110 m hurdles race.
  • 200 m hurdles race.
  • 400m hurdles race.

(d)      Qualities of the athlete participating in the event
