Discuss the system of physical education in Sparta.                                                  [10 marks]

This question was not popular among the candidates as majority of them did not respond to it, and the few ones that responded to it had low scores.
The expected answers are as follow:
The system of physical education in Sparta

  • Sparta concentrated on training her citizens so that they would have sound bodies for service to the state on the battle field.
  • At age 20, Spartan males became full- time soldiers and remained on active duty until age 60.
  • Boys were given military training, while girls were given exercises and house chores.
  • The education of the child in Sparta was the responsibility of the state
  • The mother took care of the child until age 7.
  • After 7 years he is handled over for further training by a council of elders.
  • The child is sent to military school for training
  • In military school, they study variety of physical activities such as wrestling, jumping, throwing, marching, horseback riding and military training
  • Full citizenship was gained at the age of 30 years.
  • After 30 years every male has the responsibility of becoming a state teacher.
