(a)        Explain the following terms in athletics:

(i)         breaking a record;                                            [2 marks]
(ii)        coasting;                                                          [2 marks]
(iii)       staggered start.                                                [2 marks]

(b)        (i)         What is false start in athletics?             [2 marks]
(ii)        Define the term trials in field events.                 [2 marks]

Observation

 

This question was popular among the candidates as majority of them responded to it. However, their performance in it was below average. The performance was below average.

In part (a), few candidates were able to explain the terms breaking a record, coasting and staggered start in athletics.

In part (b), majority of the candidates could not define the term trials in field events.


The expected answers are as follow:
1.  (a)   Explanation of terms in athletics
                        i.          Breaking a record
It is a situation whereby an old record has been exceeded/surpassed/explained by setting a new/higher performance/explained.
OR
It is when an athlete returns a time that is better than existing best performance.

                        ii.         Coasting
Moving easily in the middle of a long distance / named race without using much power/explained.  
OR
It is when a runner is moving/running effortlessly /smoothly towards the finish line especially when winning the race/competition.

iii.        Staggered start
It is the arrangement of the runners in lanes on different scratch lines such that they cover equal distance/explained.
OR
It is a type of start used to compensate for distance on an oval track.
OR
runners are placed at different points corresponding to the lane in which
they are running. 
OR
Start of a race in which runners do not start on a straight line, used in races run around a curve up to and including 800 meters race.

   (b)     i           Explanation of false start in athletics
A false start in athletics is when an athlete beats the gun/takes off before the gun/command/explained.
OR
It is when a runner/athlete begins a race before the starting gun is fired /whistle is blown/beat the gun/making a movement from the set position.

ii          Definition of trials in field event
It is a meet/competition organized to select representatives for the state/country in a major competition/explained.
OR

It is the number of attempt a competitor is allowed to perform a specified field event.
