Observation

This was a fairly attempted question. Candidates were not able to properly identify the character of Gabriel.
This question requires:

• The statement of the theme of racism and its effects on an African-American family, such as disrupted dreams and betrayals.

• A character identification of Gabriel.
• Gabriel’s absurd world: his visit enables us to see him at close range. His delusions as a result of his brain damage makes him create an absurd world for himself.
• Gabriel as a victim of betrayal:  according to Troy, he served his country as a soldier during the Second World War. He suffered brain damage as a result of his participation in the war. He was paid only a meager compensation. Troy used Gabriel’s money to purchase a house for himself. Even though the money that bought the house belonged to Gabriel, he ended up staying in the basement of Miss Pearl’s house.
• Gabriel’s words appear to foreshadow Troy’s death: he claims he has seen Troy’s name in St. Peter’s book. This suggests that Troy’s death and judgment will come sooner than all the other characters. His hallucinations about hell hounds in Troy’s backyard suggest that Troy is hell-bound.

Candidates’ performance was average.
