Literature-In-English Paper 3 WASSCE (PC), 2021

Question 1

JOHN K. KARGBO: Let me Die Alone
Comment on the relationship between Yoko and Gbanya.

Observation

This question was very straightforward and many candidates attempted it.

Candidates’ responses were expected to contain the following:

  • Identification of the major theme of the relationship between the sexes in what is essentially a patriarchal society.
  • Character Identification: Yoko is Gbanya’s favourite wife; beautiful, ambitious and head of the dancers; Gbanya is Chief of Senehun and married to thirty-seven women.
  • Relationship between male and female: The woman is subservient to the man; Women are not fit for state duties.
  • Gbanya refuses to hand over the chiefdom to Yoko.
  • All the indications are that the society is patriarchal through and through and that traditional beliefs prevail.
  • However, Gbanya defies tradition and hands over the chiefdom to Yoko to punish the conspirators.

Only a few candidates were able to do these; and the performance was fair.
