Outline any five reasons for the study of government.

Observation

 

This was a popular and a straight forward question. All the candidates who attempted it performed very well and scored high marks. Nevertheless, some candidates deprived themselves good marks by merely listing the points without further explanation. Candidates were expected to provide the following answers to the question:

 

(i)To enable people to know how they are governed.

(ii)        To know one’s right, duties and obligations in a given political system.
(iii)       To learn and defend one’s rights when violated.
(iv)       To know and understand how other countries are governed.
(v)        To enable people know the dos and don’ts of government.
(vi)       To understand the form of government suitable for a particular state/country.
(vii)      It exposes students to the existence, importance and functions of international organizations.
(viii)     It inculcates the spirit of patriotism, nationalism and offers training in citizenship to the people of the country.
(ix)       It prepares citizens for the future.
(x)        It offers and develops leadership skills and training.
(xi)       It enables us to compare political systems.
(xii)      It develops and instils sense of logical thoughts and analysis in the learner.
(xiii)     It encourages political participation and arouses citizens’ interest in governance.
(xiv)     It exposes students to basic concepts to enable them resist and prevent tyranny.
