(a) List three aims of consumer education
(b) With the aid of a diagram represent the groups involved in the distribution network
of manufactured goods.
(c) State four points to consider before embarking on bulk purchasing.

This question on consumer education was well answered by majority of the candidates. Majority of the candidates attempted this question correctly, it was their strength.
The expected answers are:
(a)Aims of consumer Education
(b) Enlightening the public (consumers) about their rights, as far as food purchasing is concerned.
(c)Educating the public about the various:
(i)  Laws that govern the manufacture and sales of food.
(ii) Standards that manufacturers of food must comply with
(iii)Sanitary practices that should be followed in food handling at all stages until its fmal consumption.

. Create awareness about various activities of different agencies at Federal, State and local levels that work towards protecting the safety of food.
The rights of a consumer include:
Right of choice- should be free to buy what is wanted

  • Right to information - appropriate information should be supplied by the manufacturers
  • Available goods should be safe for consumption;
  • They should be allowed to speak their minds on a available goods.

(b) Distribution of Network of Manufacturing Good. 

 

(c)        Points to consider before embarking on bulk purchasing

(i) The storage facilities available - consider the type ofstotage facilities in the house (e.g. if a house lacks a: deep-freezer, it would be unwise to buy a large quantity of frozen fish or meat as this can get spoilt and lead to wastage).

(ii) The nature of Food stuff (e.g. perishable foods do not keep for a long time. Such items should not be bought in large quantities. Non-perishable foods such as cereals and legumes however can be purchased in a large quantities).

(iii) Rate of Consumption of the food item(A food item that is seldom consumed should not be purchased in too large an amount as the chances of spoilage,~ncrease with prolonged storage).

(iv) A vailability of the foodstuffs (prolonged storage can also lead to loss the nutritive quality of the food.)

  • Availability of money - (This is another major determining factor in bulk purchasing and should be considered well before embarking on bulk purchasing. The housewife should make sure that sufficient money is left after bulk purchasing to be able to meet the petty purchases to be made in the house.)
  • Season of the year – (buy in bulk when  foods are in season.)
  • Size of the family
  • Type of the family
