(a) State three uses of openings on garment
(b) Suggest two suitable openings for each of the following:

(i) the back neck of a baby’s dress;

(ii) the cuff of a long sleeve;

(iii) the front of a boy’s pair of trousers;

(iv)the front of a jumper.   

(c) (i) List two examples of inconspicuous fastening

(ii) List two examples of fastening that have decorative effect.

(d) State four general rules for attaching fastenings.

Observation

Most candidates could not differentiate between opening and fastenings.

The required answers to the questions are as follows:

(a)       Uses of opening on garments

-      For free movement
-      For decoration
-     As a style feature
 -    Allows garment to be made in a close fitting style
-     Allows garments to be put on and taken off easily.

                                                                                                                                   
  (b) Two suitable openings for each of the following

  (i) back neck of a baby’s dress -        bound opening, slit opening, continuous wrap opening

(ii) cuffs of a long sleeve          -           bound opening, continuous wrap opening 

-   adapted continuous wrap opening, faced opening
    (iii)       front of a boy’s trousers      -           fly opening   -           zipper opening

    (iv)       front of a jumper   -           placket slit opening/faced slit opening

(c)(i)    Two examples of inconspicuous fastenings

Hook and eye, hook and bar, zipper, Velcro, press studs, press fasteners.

  1. Fastenings that have decorative effect

Tapes, button and buttonhole, zipper, button and loop/rouleaux loop, the strings, frogs, eyelet and cord/lace.

3(d)     General rules for attaching fastenings

-     Fastenings should be sewn on double fabrics
-     Fastenings should be enough to close the opening
-     Fastenings should not gap but close the opening
  -  Fastenings should match the weight and texture of fabric.
-    Fastenings should be washable if fabric is washable.
-    Fastenings should suit the age of the wearer
-    It should suit the sex of the wearer
-    Fastenings should be sewn exactly opposite one another in order that the opening will be flat when fastened.
