(a) State three reasons for the formation of Civil Society Organizations in Nigeria.

(b) Explain three obstacles to the realization of the goals of Civil Society Organizations in Nigeria.

Observation

 

This question was attempted by majority of the candidates and their performance in this question was bad. They were able to interpret the questions and give points. Additional points candidates missed out are:

 

REASONS FOR THE FORMATION OF CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS IN NIGERIA

  1. To serve as the voice of the masses/ downtrodden.
  2. To advocate for effective governance.
  3. To educate people on their fundamental rights, duties and obligations.
  4. To promote and organize programmes that will enlighten the citizens.
  5. To condemn acts of discrimination and related practices usually exhibited by some government office holders.
  6.  To advocate for peaceful co-existence among the people of a nation.
  7. To provide a platform for the training of future leaders.
  8. To act as agents of change/reform in the society.
  9. To check electoral malpractices by engaging in election monitoring.
  10. To make government people-oriented.
  11. To serve as a watch-dog and check the excesses of government.
  12. To promote accountability.

 

OBSTACLES TO THE REALIZATION OF THE GOALS OF CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS IN NIGERIA

  1. Lack of clear goals and functions.
  2. Dishonesty/insincerity/questionable reputation.
  3. Unnecessarily confrontational on some sensitive issues.
  4. Undemocratic nature of the organizations/lack of internal democracy.
  5. Attacks and intimidation by government.
  6. Camouflaging their purposes/deception.
  7. Poor funding.
  8. High cost of operations.
  9. Poor organization.
