  1. Describe how James dealt with the problem of partiality in the church.
  2. Indicate three ways by which partiality is practiced in the church today.

 

Observation

 

 

This question was popular among candidates and their performance was above average. However, it was noticed that few of the candidates did not go straight to the point, they gave unnecessary preamblesand answered by preaching rather than providing their response as outlined by James. Candidates were expected to list out the pointsas detailed below;

  1. James encouraged Christians not to show partiality because they hold the faith of Jesus Christ who is the Lord of Glory.
  2. He warned Christians not to allow class distinction in their midst.
  3. If a rich man who wore good clothes was given good seats in the church while the poor were offered low seat; then they are being discriminated against.
  4. James reminded us that those who are poor in the world are chosen by God to be rich in the faith.
  5. God has also chosen the poor to be the heirs of the kingdom of God which is promised to all who obey and serve him.
  6. James reminded the Christians that the rich were those who oppressed the poor and took them to court.
  7. James also pointed out that the rich were those who blaspheme God’s name.
  8. James advised the Christians to love their neighbours according to the scriptures.
  9. However, if they should show partiality, they have committed sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.
  10. For whoever keeps the whole law and fails in one is guilty of breaking all the law.
  11. He said that they should let their thoughts and actions conform to those that are to be judged under the law of liberty.
  12. Whoever fails to show mercy will be judged without mercy.
  13. James pointed out mercy triumphs over judgment.

Areas of partiality in the church

  1. When appointments to church offices are based on other consideration rather than merits.
  2. Allocation of seats to the wealthy during services.
  3. Neglecting the contributions of the poor.
  4. When the poor do not have a say in the affairs of the church.
  5. Offering special prayers to the highest donors.
  6. The rich are usually exempted from certain duties.
  7. When the leadership of the church is guilty of favouritism, nepotism and tribalism.
  8. Undemocratic decision-making/Decision-making left in the hands of a few.
