Question 8

A. Relate James’ exposition on the relationship between faiths and works.

B. In what two ways can the Christian demonstrate commitment to God?

Observation

This question was popular among candidates. However, it was noticed that candidates gave their own interpretation and version of what they understood faiths and work to be. They interpreted the meanings of these components socially rather than how James put it in the Bible. Candidates were expected to list out the points as detailed below;

i. James observed that there is no profit to claim that you have faith without works to show.
ii. Faith therefore not backed with works cannot save.
iii. Genuine faith is often shown by works of charity- caring for the sick, needy, widows and orphans.
iv. Therefore, faith without good works is dead.
v. One is justified by works and not by faith alone.
vi. It is easier for a Christian’s faith to be seen in his/her works than to see works in his/her faith.
vii. James maintains that people who have belief in God without expressing it in deeds to justify their faith are not different from the devil.
viii. Though the devil believes in God, it does not do God’s work.
ix. Abraham, James said was justified by faith when he was ready to offer his son, Isaac, upon the altar.
x. Here, Abraham expressed his faith in works.
xi. By this obedience (faith), it was counted for him (Abraham) as righteousness and he became a friend of God.

Ways a Christian can demonstrate commitment to God
i. Obedience to the commandments of God.
ii. Having faith and trust in God.
iii. Service to God/ Regular at worship and participation in all church programs.
iv. Visiting the sick and caring for the needy and poor.
v. Living a chaste/ moral life.
vi. Loving and praying for one another.
vii. Scripture study.
viii. Acknowledging/Depending on God- thanking Him for Life and achievements.
