SECTION B: THEMES FROM THE SYNOPTIC GOSPELS AND THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES

Question 5

A. Highlight the synoptic accounts of the baptism of Jesus Christ.

B. In what three ways is Jesus’ baptism significant to a Christian?

Observation

This was a popular question and many candidates were attracted to it and performed greatly in both parts. Candidates were familiar about the baptism of Christ and the significance to Christianity. The only challenge recorded was that candidates could not arrange the incidents as they were recorded in each of the synoptic gospels. For those who missed out on what was expected to write, the points expected of them are;
i. Matthew, Mark and Luke recorded the story of the baptism of Jesus.
ii. The three agreed that John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the river Jordan.
iii. They all observed that Jesus came for the baptism from Galilee
iv. However, Mark was very specific that in those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee to be baptized.
v. Matthew alone talked about a dialogue between Jesus and John showing John’s reluctance and inferiority to baptize Jesus.(I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?).
vi. Jesus replied, let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.
vii. Matthew concluded that John got convinced and had Jesus baptized through immersion.
viii. The three writers continued that when Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened, and God’s spirit descended on Jesus in the form of a dove.
ix. Luke alone said Jesus was praying after the baptism when the heavens opened.
x. Luke emphasized that the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus in a bodily form as a dove.
xi. After this the three gospels maintained that a voice was heard confirming Jesus as the Son of God.
