An elastic material of length 3 m is to be stretched to produce an extension three times its original length. Calculate the force required to produce the extension if the force constant of the material is 982.3 N m-1.
Candidates were to able to write the mathematical expression of Hooke’s law and substitute correctly but some were unable to note that extension x = 3 x 3 = 9 m.
