Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was good. However, many candidates had issues classifying fishing gears into passive and active gears as required in Question 2 (a)(i).

The expected answers include:
(a)        (i)         Classification of fishing gear

  Passive gear

Specimen D    -           Fish trap
Specimen E     -           Hook and line

Active gear

 Specimen C     -           Drag net
Specimen F     -           Cast net

(ii)        Reasons for the classification
-           Active gear require additional effort to make a catch
-           Active gear have to be moved to catch fish/needs to be operated to
make a catch
-           Passive gear are stationery/does not need additional effort/could make a catch without an operator

(b)        Advantage of specimen C (Drag net) over specimen E (Hook and line)

   -           Specimen C (drag net) catches many fishes at a time while specimen E
(Hook and line) catches one fish at a time
-           Fish is retrieved immediately while the fish on hook might have become stale

(c)        (i)         Components of specimen C (Drag net)
-           net
-           float line /head rope
-           lead line /weight line /sinker line/foot rope
-           floater
-           sinker / lead / weight
