(a)        Enumerate five requirements for participant as a voter in Nigeria
general elections.


(b)        State five purposes of an election in the democratic Nigerian society.

Observation

 

Candidates’ performance in this question was commendable. Majority of the candidates attempted this question and those who attempted it did justice to the topic. On average, the performances of candidates were above average. Points candidates were to take note of are

 

CODITIONS FOR VOTING AND BEING VOTED FOR IN NIGERIA

  1. Age – i.e only adults, (18years and above) are eligible to vote in Nigeria.
  2. Registration – a citizxen must register with the Electoral Commission ( INEC) in designated electoral locations/ centers.
  3. Citizenship – only citizens are eligble for voting or being voted for.
  4. Sanity – only citizens in good mental condition will be allowed to vote.
  5. Residency – a citizen must be a resident in a particular area for a certain period of time before he or she can be allowed o register or vote.

 

PURPOSE OF ELECTION IN THE DEMOCRATIC NIGERIAN SOCIETY

  1. It promotes legitimacy of government.
  2. It provides smooth, orderly method of changing government in the country.
  3. It provides political education/socialization for citizens.
  4. It enables citizens to ascertain the popularity of government/policies/ manifestos.
  5. Election is used by government to measure public opinions on certain political issues in the country.
