Question 4

(4) Figure 3 shows the elevation of a container with an open top.

Draw, full size, the:
(a) given elevation;
(b) plan;
(c) development of the container.

Observation

The attempt on the question was good; however, the respondents of this question did well in (a) and (b) but not in (c). The solution of the entire question and the explanation to the poorly answered part of the question is given below

(c) STEPS INVOLVED IN THE EVELOPMENT OF THE CONTAINER
  • Extending the base ab at both ends

  • Using radius af and bg at centres a and b to draw an arc to intercept the horizontal base line at J and K respectively

  • Dropping perpendiculars from points J and K to intercept extended base lines at point f1 and e1 and g1 and h1 respectively

  • Joining the points A to f1, A to f2, B to g2, B to g, C to h1, C to h2, D to e2, and D to e1 to produce the sides of the container

  • Joining the points e1 to f1, f2 to g2, g1 to h1 and h2 to e2 to complete the pattern of the container
