  3. Fig. 1 is a safety device found in an RTV workshop.

  2. State one use of the device.
  3. Name the parts labelled M and N.
  4. State one function each of the parts labelled M and N.


Observation

The expected responses were:


(a)           Definition of first aid treatment
The immediate/first treatment given to a victim of an accident/sudden illness before proper medical attention to save the individual(s)/prevent the injury from getting worse.  


(b)            Ways of ensuring safety in a Radio, Television and Electronic Works (RTV) workshop

  • Availability of safety devices
  • Proper usage of available safety devices
  • Adhering to manufacturer’s instruction
  • Observing workshop safety rules and regulations
  • Avoid operating machine/equipment without adequate knowledge
  • Avoid overcrowding the workbench with tools
  • Using the right tools for job at hand
  • Avoid horseplay/monkey act in the workshop
  • Avoid water spillage on workshop floor
  • Wear appropriate workshop clothing
  • Put off power supply after the day’s work
  • Avoid working on/contact with live wires

(iii)       M – releasing handle/opening lever                           
N – nozzle/outlet/discharge nozzle                            
(iv)       M – enables the content of the device to flow out when pressed                  
N – regulate the flow of the extinguishing agent                  
– allows the passage of extinguishing materials from the device.


Question 1 required candidates to respond to tasks on workshop safety and show some level of familiarity with a given safety device. As reported by the Chief Examiner, majority of the candidates that attempted question 1 responded reasonably well to the tasks.
