  1. State two duties of a field judge before the commencement of each of the following athletic events:
    1. high jump;
    2. long jump;
    3. discus.

  2. List in sequence, the phases common to all jumping events in athletics.

         [4 marks]

 

Observation

 

This question was not popular among the candidates as majority of them did not respond to it.

In part (a), majority of the candidates could not state the duty of a Chief Judge before the commencement of athletic the events.

In part (b), majority of the candidates listed the phases common to all jumping events in athletics.

 

The expected answers are as follows:

  • (a) (i)    HIGH JUMP

 

  • Marks  the upper side of the crossbar clearly
  • Checks  to ensure that the landing area is safe
  • Checks  to ensure that the uprights are properly fixed
  • Ensures  that  measuring tape, rake, spade are available
  • Ensures  that score sheets and writing materials are available
  • Makes  sure that red and white flags are available
  • Checks for athletes who may be at a track event
  • Measures and records opening height on the score sheet

                       

       (ii) LONG JUMP

  • Checks  that the sand is soft, moist and level/inspects the pitch
  • Ensures  that red and white flags are available
  • Makes sure that measuring tape, rake, spade, roller and trowel are available
  • Ensures that score sheets and writing materials are available
  • Checks that safety measures are adequate

                                                           
(iii)    DISCUS

            -           Checks that safety measures are adequate
-           Checks the throwing surface and brush which should be cleaned if necessary
-           Checks implement/missile
-           Checks measuring equipment, tape, marking pegs and measuring spike
-           Ensures that a brush is available
-           Ensures that audible warning apparatus for sector judges is available
-           Checks-in the competitors
-           Supervises the warm-up and sees that it is conducted in a safe manner
-           Ensures that score sheets and writing materials are available
