Question 3

(a) What is casting?

(b) State in sequential order, five steps involved in casting an object.

(c) With the aid of a sketch, show a core print in use.

OBSERVATION

This question did not pose much problem to the candidates except part (3)(b) of the question which required the candidates to state in sequential order, five steps involved in casting an object. Candidates were expected to give the following response:

(1) production of pattern;
(2) preparation of mould;
(3) preparation of core;
(4) melting of metals;
(5) coupling of the mould (where separate flasks are used);
(6) introduction of the molten (liquid) metal to the pressured mould;
(7) solidification process, and
(8) felting and cleaning.
