Examine the impact of the racial environment on Troy and Bono in the play.

This question requires the candidates to examine the impact of the racial environment on Troy and Bono in the play. This was a popular and well answered question.
The requirements of this question include the following:

  • Identify the theme of racial discrimination and its negative effects on the lives of African Americans in the 1950s is prominent in the play.
  • Character identification of Troy Maxson and Jim Bono.
  • Racial environment in the play: it is an overarching white dominated society. Blacks are consigned to menial/lesser jobs such as garbage collection and music. Upward mobility is limited and can only be fought for Troy’s struggle to become a truck driver, a position reserved for whites.
  • Impact of Racial Discrimination on Troy: he develops a low-esteem which affects his marriage and attitude. He is unable see that Cory has a higher ambition.
  • Impact of Racial Discrimination on Bono: Bono goes through similar harsh experiences as Troy does but resigns himself to the situation. He sees his friendship with Troy as the protection he needs in an oppressive environment.
