Compare Paleo and Mama Orojo in the novel.

Observation

This was a popular question which requires the candidates to attempt a comparison of the characters of Paleo and Mama Orojo in the novel.

Candidates were expected to discuss the following:

  • The themes of xenophobia generated by poor governance etc.
  • The identification of Paleo and Mama Orojo.
  • Nationality and industry: both Paleo and Mama Orojo are Nigerians. Both have demonstrated commitment to their jobs.
  • Assiduity: Mama is meticulous as shown in her preparation to travel. Paleo schemes to offer jobs to the illegal residents on his farm. Mama is devoted and dedicated to her religious beliefs. Once they set their minds to do something, they see it through.
  • Humanity: Mama is humane and compassionate as deduced from her relationships with others. She supports her church without expecting anything in return. During the fire outbreak, she risks her life to save others. On the contrary, Paleo takes advantage of immigrants and blackmails them into working for him. He gains personally from a national crisis. However, Paleo shows appreciation to Mama for saving his daughter.

Candidates’ performance was very good.
