Question 4                  ALEX AGYEI-AGYIRI: Unexpected Joy at Dawn

Examine Nii Tackie’s experience as a teacher.

Observation

This question requires the candidates to comment on the experience of Nii as a teacher.

Candidates were expected to discuss the following:

  • The theme of the consequences of leadership mismanagement of the citizens.
  • The identification of the character of Nii
  • Nii’s school: it is a three-storeyed building located five kilometres from Expense Bank, where Nii Tackie works. The school is run in the afternoon by a retired educationist.
  • Nii Tackie’s experience as a teacher
  • He arrives routinely late at the school as a result of his having to walk five kilometres.
  • The ‘old headmaster’ complains about Nii Tackie’s incessant lateness.
  • Some of the students disrespect him. They even mock him.
  • The students write insulting things on the board for him to read. Example: ‘Nii learn to use transport and save your legs’.
  • He trips and falls face down on the cement floor.
  • He feels agitated and ‘almost in tears’.
  • In frustration, Nii demands his three weeks’ allowance so that he may quit teaching.
  • The headmaster tries to persuade him to continue teaching.
  • Significance of Nii Tackie’s teaching experience: his teaching experience highlights his circumstances as he struggles to cope with the hard times in Ghana. Social values are seriously undermined in the students’ regard for Nii. Nii’s experience underscores his character transformation. The experience advances the plot.

Candidates’ performance was good.
