    Examine the role of the supernatural in Wuthering Heights.

Observation

Candidates were able to point out supernatural events in the novel. However, most could not identify the riles of these events.

Candidates were expected to discuss:

  • The link between the living and dead is one of the major themes explored in the novel.
  • Wuthering Heights is a Gothic novel, the prominent features of which include: dark and exotic settings; elements of fear, horror, gloom, suspense and death; mystery and supernatural beings.
  • Lockwood’s experience at Wuthering Heights when he spends a night there.
  • Heathcliff’s encounters with Catherine’s ghost.
  • The sighting of the ghost of Heathcliff by the village folk.
  • Significance of the supernatural: enhances the plot; explains the events and the attitudes of characters towards these events.

Candidates performed well.
