    BUCHI EMECHETA: Second Class Citizens

Compare Mr. Okpara and Mr. Obi in the novel.

Observation

This question is the comparison of the character and roles of Mr Okpara and Mr Obi in the novel.  Some candidates merely narrated the stories involving both characters

Candidates were expected to mention the following points among others:

  • The theme of birth control concerns Adah and other women in the novel
  • Character identification: Mr. Okpara is the gentleman who comforts Adah in the park near Gospel Oak village. Mr. Obi is Francis, Adah’s husband.
  • Okpara and Obi: Both are Ibo men; they have come to England for education; Okpara has completed his course in law, and is a civil servant, whereas Obi has failed all his exams and is unemployed; Okpara has a working wife whom he supports; Obi’s working wife feeds him.
  • The conduct of the two men and their attitude to life: Francis appears to have given up on himself, blaming others, especially his wife, for his failures. Okpara is hardworking and takes care of his home.

Most answers did not touch on the above points but told stories to earn poor marks.
