                                                            Figure 1

(a)        Identify the parts labelled S, T, U, V, W and X in Figure 1.
(b)        Explain the characteristics of S, U and V.

Observation

This question was also popular among candidates, most of whom scored below average marks. The question required candidates to identify the parts labelled S, T, U, V, W and X in the diagram and explain the characteristics of S, U and V in the (a) and (b) parts of the question respectively. Most candidates identified V and W incorrectly in (a) part and avoided the (b) part of the question. Candidates were expected to answer thus to score maximum marks:

(a)

S – Neck.
T – Shoulder/shank.
U – Belly.
V – Bend.
W– Back.
X – leg/shank.
(b)

S –  This part of animal skin varies considerably according to the type of animal.  It is very thick in substance and heavily lined with growth marks or wrinkles.

U –  This portion of the hide/skin is described as having the lightest substance and generally of the poorest quality.
–   It is soft and consist of loose fibres.

V – This is composed of the stoutest leather as this covers the delicate organs of the animal along the back. This part of the animal skin is also most even in quality and texture.
