Question 3
3. The diagram below is an illustration of a bone in the vertebral column of humans. Study the diagram carefully and use it to answer questions 3(a), (b) and (c)

(a) (i)   Name the bone illustrated in the diagram                              [1 mark]
(ii) State two observable features which are characteristic
of the bone illustrated                                                              [2 mark]
  .
(b) Name the parts labelled I,II,III,IV,V and VI [3 marks]
(c)  Name two other bones which are similar in structure to              [1 mark]
The bone illustrated in the diagram.                                            [2 marks]
Observation
This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor.  In part (a)(i) candidates could not correctly name the cervical bone illustrated in the diagram and in (ii) candidates could not also correctly state observable features which are characteristics of the cervical bone.  In part (b) candidates could not correctly name the parts labelled I,II,III,IV,V, and VI of the cervical bone.
In part (c) candidates could not correctly name bones that are similar in structure to the cervical bone.
However, the expected answers are as follows:
3(a) (i) STRUCTURE ILLUSTRATED IN THE DIAGRAM
- cervical vertebra

(ii) OBSERVABLE FEATURES THAT ARE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BONE
- short neural spine
 - branched transverse process
 - large centrum
 - large neural canal
 - small vertebraterial canal / small holes

    (b)     NAME OF THE PARTS LABELLED
    I – neural spine
    II – anterior articular facet
    III – transverse process
    IV – centrum
    V   – vertebrarteriar canal
    VI  – neural canal

    (c)   OTHER BONES ASSOCIATED WITH THE BONE ILLUSTRATED IN TH  DIAGRAM
