Garment Making Paper 3, WASSCE (SC), 2018

Question 2

2(a) List four measurements required for drafting a fitted skirt.
(b) State one difference between the following terms as used in garment construction.
i. tucks and pleats
ii. smocking and shirring
iii. overcasting and over sewing

Observation

Many of the candidates seem not to be able to interpret the question clearly. In 2a, candidates wrote wrong answers for example  band, length , length to knee, back and front skirt etc instead of writing the actual areas that is supposed to be measured e.g. waist , hips, shirt length, hip depth /waist to hip/hip point/ hip line. Candidates seem to find the analysis of some garment making technical terms difficult. This manifested in their inability to differentiate between some terms in question 2b.such as:

  1. Tucks and pleats Tucks are small folds of fabric evenly stitched to the edge of the fold, which are visible on the right side while pleats are wider folds of fabric which are stitched across close to the edge to hold the folds down.
  2. An embroidery technique in which a fabric is gather and then embroidered with                 decorative stitches to hold the gathers in place while Stirring is made by several rows of gathering that are reinforced.
