The candidates were required to
(a) State steps on how crossway strips can be joined.
(b) Write uses of crossway strips.

 

Observation

 

In question 4(a) and b, most candidates did not attempt this question and those that did scored low marks.  The expected steps on how crossway strips can be joined include:

  1. lay out the strips side by side, right sides together
  2.  cut the ends parallel to the selvedge edges
  3. place the selvedge edges together, right sides facing
  4. tack and stitch on the seam line between the angles formed by the overlapping corners, remove tacking and press turning out flat
  5. cut off the protruding corners and iron.

The expected uses of crossway strips are: for binding; for facing; for piping; to make rouleau loops.
