Automobile Parts Mechandising Paper 2 WASSCE (SC), 2016

Section A

Question 1

Observation

Most of the candidates who attempted this question could not provide the required responses to parts (a), (b) and (d) of the question.  The required responses to these parts are:

(a)        (i)         The parts labelled are:

                        U         -           drum
V         -           anchor
W        -           brake shoe
X         -           wheel cylinder
Y         -           connecting pipe (metal pipe)
Z          -           master cylinder.

(ii)        The function of the parts labelled X and Z are:

X         -           wheel cylinder – converts the hydraulic pressure to
a force that pushes the wheel-cylinder piston outward which forces the brake shoes to contact the drum, i.e. convert fluid pressure to mechanical energy.

                                                Z          -           Master cylinder – converts drivers force (when the
brake pedal is depressed) to fluid pressure which is
transferred to the wheel cylinder.

(b)        The type of shoe arrangement is a one leading and one trailing shoe
arrangement.

(d)       Advantages of disc brake over drum type are:

-           dissipate heat faster, no brake fade;
-           the braking surfaces are clean;
-           it is lighter in weight;
-           simpler in construction and cheap;
-           easier to service;
-           automatic compensation for lining wear;
-           pad wear can be examined without removing the wheel.
