Observation

Candidates’ performance in Question 2 was poor and marks were below average.

(a) Many candidates mixed up pre-arrival activities of chicks with post-arrival activities

in a brooder house. They mentioned vaccination, construction of pens, adjusting
the temperature etc which are wrong answers; thus losing marks.
(b)  Few candidates were familiar with the reactions of chicks to different heat regimes
supplied by electric bulb and marks were poor.

The expected answers include:

The expected answers include:

2.  (a)   Activities that should be carried out on the farm before the arrival of specimen D
(Day old chick)

  • Clearing of bush and surrounding
  • Cleaning and disinfecting of poultry house
  • Washing and disinfecting of poultry equipment
  • Provision of appropriate litter materials
  • Provision of brooding equipment
  • Provision of feed
  • Provision of water
  • Provision of medication/glucose
  • Provision of heat few hours before arrival
  • Repairing of brooder house
  • Provision of light

 (b)       Observable reactions of specimen D (Day old chick) when the temperature in the poultry
house is
(i)         High

  • Move away from the heat source
  • Panting
  • Heat stress
  • Chicks feed less
  • Chicks drink more water
  • Chicks spread out wings
  • Death

            (ii)        Low

  • Chicks move/cuddle together
  • Chicks are less active
  • Trample one another
  • Mortality occurs
  • Move closer to heat source
  • Chirping
  • Shivering

(iii)       Moderate

  • Evenly spread out
  • They are active
  • Feed normally
  • Drink normally

(c)        Disadvantages of using specimen E (Coal pot) in poultry house

  • Produces chocking fumes which could lead to respiratory diseases
  • Produces smoke
  • Could result in fire outbreak
  • Labour intensive
  • Birds can jump into the pot causing death
  • Heat cannot be easily regulated

 (d)      Uses of specimen F (Electric bulb)

  • Provision of heat for chicks during brooding
  • For illumination/lighting
  • Used for candling
  • To increase the day length in layers/photoperiodism
