(ii) Mention two advantages of using specimen H in animal production.

(iii) State two disadvantages of using specimen H in animal production.
                                                                                                                                    [2 marks]
(b)        Give one reason for using specimen I in the brooding of chicks.                  [1 mark]
(c)        (i) State two ways in which the use of specimen J is important in animal production. [2 marks]
(ii) Name three farm animals on which specimen J could be used[3 marks]

Observation

Question 3 was poorly attempted by many candidates. Many candidates mixed up question 3(a)(i) and 3(a)(ii); thus interchanging the advantages of plastic bucket with its use in animal production. Furthermore, only few candidates could state the use of ear tag in animal production.
Some candidates also misconstrued question 3 (b) by dwelling on the use of thermometer in chicks rather than in a brooder house.

The expected answers include:

3 (a)     (i)         Ways in which specimen H (Plastic bucket) could be used in poultry production
-           Fetching/supply of water
-           Conveying/supply of feed
-           Collection/packing of eggs/conveying of processed products
-           Evacuation of litter material/disposal of waste
-           Storage of feed/water
-           Storage of drugs/keeping treatment tools/as first aid container
-           Mixing of medications
-           Mixing of feed

(ii)        Advantages of using Specimen H (Plastic Bucket) in animal production
-           Portable/easy to handle/light in weight
-           Does not rust/corrode
-           Cheap
-           It is readily available
-           Cannot be attacked by termites/insects
-           Contents are protected from contamination
-           Does not absorb moisture/keep contents dry
-           Eggs are not easily cracked

(iii)       Disadvantages of using Specimen H (Plastic Bucket) in animal production
                        -           Can break/crack
-           Can catch fire
-           Non-biodegradable/contaminates the environment
-           Affected by direct sunlight
-           Absorbs smell and taste of items kept in it/tainting

(b)        Uses of specimen I (Mercury in glass thermometer) in brooding of chicks
-           For checking temperature in the brooder house

(c)        (i)  Ways in which specimen J (Ear tag) is important in animal production
-           to identify a particular animal
-           to know the total number/population of animals
-           to track animal records

(ii)        Farm animals on which specimen J (Ear tag) could be used
-           Cattle                                      -           Horse
-           Sheep                                      -           Donkey
-           Camel                                      -           Rabbit
-           Pig                                           -           Goat
