Weakness and Remedies

 

Candidates were unable to:

  • draw and label the parts of a land snail
  • state the advantages of introduction in animal improvement programme;
  • state the disadvantages of selection in animal improvement programme;
  • state the physical features of animals which could be selected for breeding;
  • name the records that could be kept by a poultry farmer;
  • mention the symptoms of coccidiosis in poultry;
  • mention the features of a good laying chicken;
  • state the changes that take place after chopped forage has been compressed and covered in silage preparation;
  • give reasons for carrying out management practices in pastures;
  • complete the table on the effect of low temperature on the listed factors;
  • spell technical terms correctly.

Consequent on the identified weaknesses observable in the candidates’ scripts, the Chief Examiners made the following recommendations:

  • Only competent graduates of Animal Science/Production should be saddled with the responsibility of teaching the subject in Senior Secondary Schools;
  • Animal Husbandry should be taught as a practical oriented subject through laboratory activities, field trips, excursions e.t.c.;
  • Teachers should lay emphasis on correct spellings of  terms;

(iv)       Improved reading culture is advocated among candidates;
(v)        Adequate coverage of the syllabus by teachers before the examination;

  • Adequate facilities and textbooks on Animal Husbandry should be made available to enhance the teaching-learning of Animal Husbandry in Senior Secondary Schools.
