Weakness and Remedies

 

Candidates were unable to:

  • explain deworming, culling, debeaking and delousing in poultry production;
  • complete the table on forage crops;
  • state the importance of grass-legume mixture in livestock production;
  • state the characteristics of rangelands;
  • explain scalding, singeing and evisceration during slaughtering of farm animals;
  • state the marketing functions that are performed to facilitate the sale of chicken and eggs;
  • mention the ways of controlling liver fluke in sheep production;
  • draw and label the digestive system of  a domestic fowl;
  • spell technical terms and botanical names correctly;
  • follow the rubrics;
  • write legibly and concisely.

 

Consequent on the identified weaknesses observable in the candidates’ scripts, the Chief Examiners made the following recommendations:

  • Only competent graduates of Animal Science/Production should be saddled with the responsibility of teaching the subject in Senior Secondary Schools;
  • Animal Husbandry should be taught as a practical oriented subject through laboratory activities, field trips, excursions etc  
  • Teachers should lay emphasis on correct spellings of  terms and botanical names
  • Improved reading culture is advocated among candidates
  • Adequate coverage of the syllabus by teachers before the examination
  • Adequate facilities and textbooks on Animal Husbandry should be made available to enhance the teaching-learning of Animal Husbandry in Senior Secondary Schools.
