Music Paper 3A (AURAL) Aug./Sept. 2020

Question 4

Chords

Observation

Candidates’ performance in this question was average. The question required candidates to listen to a chord progression consisting of 8 chords in the key of F major and then identify the chord used in the progression. Despite the question was popular among the candidates, some of the candidates that attempted could not recognise first and second inversion of chords from the root position, thereby losing greater parts of the mark allotted to the question.

Candidates were expected to respond thus:

(i) V (Dominant root position)                        (v) VI (Submediant root position)
(ii) Vb (Dominant first position)                     (vi) Ic (Tonic second inversion)
(iii) Ib (Tonic first inversion)                          (vii) V7 (Dominant seventh root position)
(iv) III (Mediant root position)                       (viii)  I (Tonic root position)
