Question 3

(a) (i) Explain the term fish pond management.
(ii) List three modern methods of preserving fish                                                [5 marks]

  1. State three advantages of plastic tanks over concrete tanks                              [3 marks]
  2. Give three differences between Intensive and Extensive systems of aquaculture.[3marks]
  3. Mention four management practices in extensive fish culture.                          [4 marks]
  4. A fish farming company practicing the intensive fish culture system adapted the automated feeding method.
    1. Explain the type of feeding method adapted.
    2. State three advantages of the feeding method adapted.                    [5 marks]

Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was good. The candidates understood the questions but failed to put conjunction in 1(c) which requires differences and both sides did not tally.

The expected answers are as follows:
(a)        (i)         Explanation of fish pond management

It is the application of practices to achieve optimum growth/yield of fish and
also make maximum returns or earnings through the provision of suitable environment for growth

(ii)        Modern methods of preserving fish

-           Freezing/chilling                      -           Canning
-           Irradiation                               -           Pickling

(b)        Advantages of plastic tanks over concrete tanks for fish culture

            -           Cheaper to purchase
-           Easy to install
-           Occupies relatively small space
-           Easy to move about
-           Readily available
-           Convenient to manage

(c)        Differences between intensive and extensive systems of aquaculture

Intensive

Extensive

Fish are fed with complete diet

Depends on natural food

Requires high capital

Low capital requirement

High stocking density/rate

Low stocking density/rate

High output per unit area

Low output per unit area

High technology

Low technology

Production factors are monitored

Production factors are not monitored

Requires the use of skilled labour

Use of unskilled labour

Note: Tabular form or use of conjunction to score

(d)       Management practices in extensive system of fish culture

-           Liming of pond water             -           Fertilization of pond water
-           Stocking of fish pond              -           Rearing of fish
-           Harvesting                               -           Marketing
-           Weeding

(e)       (i)         Explanation of automated feeding method
It is the use of feeding device that releases a specific amount of feed into the water at a specific time interval

(ii)        Advantages of automated feeding
-           Requires minimal human intervention/saves time
-           Supplies feed to fish when required
-           Minimizes water pollution/feed wastage
-           Supplies feed to fish throughout the day/ad libitum
-           Prevents overfeeding of fish

                        -           It can hold enough feed to last fish for some days
