General Comments

The standard of the papers (Alternative A and B) compared favourably with previous years. The performance of candidates compares favourably with those of previous years. The performance separates candidates into high, average and low achievers. Generally, the performance of candidates was fair.

The rubrics were clear and direct. The marking schemes were adequate with no ambiguity. The various domains of assessment were adequately covered. This include candidates’ ability to:

  • Set-up simple experiment
  • Carry out the experimental procedure
  • Show understanding of the theoretical background behind the experiments
  • Collect and analyze data
  • Make necessary deductions from the experiments.

The candidates’ raw mean score of 28 out of 50 and a standard deviation of 07.62 with a candidature of 728924 indicates a low performance than that of WASSCE for School Candidates 2017, when a raw mean score of 29 out of 50 marks and a standard deviation of 08.49 with a candidature of 704504 was recorded.
