Question 4:     Explain any five of the following terms and give an example:
(i)         Value;
(ii)        Chroma;
(iii)       Hue;
(iv)       Analogous;
(v)       Complementary;

  • warm colours.

 

The question was answered by many candidates. The performance of the candidates that attempted the question performed very well. Nevertheless, candidates were expected to answer the question this way:            

(a)        (i)        Value
-           It measures the lightness and darkness of a colour.
Example, the scale is based on vertical pole divided into eleven
division ranging from 0 for black, while 10 is white.                                                                        
            (ii)        Chroma          

  • This means the strength/purity of colour.
  • Greyness of a colour.
  • Example, red, yellow and blue.                           

 

  • Hue
  • Another name for colour.
  • It denotes the basic colour.
  • Example, yellow, red, orange, green, blue, purple.

                              

  • Analogous
  • These are harmonious or pleasing colours closely related to each other in the colour circle.
  • They share the same basic colour and lie side by side.
  • Example, yellow, yellow- green and green.

  • Complementary
  • Are colours placed/lie opposite each other on the colour wheel.
  • Examples are blue-orange, red-green and yellow-violet.
  • Warm colours
  • These are advancing colours from the red, yellow, orange in part of the colour circle which give appearance of warmth.
  • There are sharp colours that appear closers to the viewer from a distance and makes object bigger than its size.

Examples are red, yellow and orange.
