A few candidates responded to this question commendably, however, most of the candidates that attempted this performed woefully as they failed to highlight the following:

(a)        -     sustaining the sound – damper/sustenuto una cordal pedal;
            -     reducing the intensity;
            -     muting the strings – for special effect.

(b)        (i)         a close musical score of right and left hands (great stave)
            (ii)        an open score for different groups of orchestral instruments

(c)        (i)         turn, gruppetto (grouplet)
            (ii)        acciaccatura/crushed-in note.
