Question 5

Out of 120 customers in a shop, 45 bought bags and shoes. If all the customers bought either bags or shoes and 11 more customers bought shoes than bags:

  1. illustrate this information in a diagram;
  2. find the number of customers who bought shoes;
  3. calculate the probability that a customer selected at random bought bags.

Observation

This question was reported to be very popular among the candidates. Majority of them attempted it and they performed very well in it. However, it was observed that a few of them who attempted the question could not illustrate the information using Venn diagram correctly.
In part (a), they were required to draw the diagram:

In part (b), Candidates’ were expected to solve for x in the equation: x + 45 + (x + 11) = 120 and this will yield x = 32. The number that bought shoes are 45 + x + 11 = 45 + 32 + 11 = 88.
In part (c),
probability that a customer selected at random bought bags =
 = 0.6417
